Kate’s Top 5 ~ Tips And Tricks

I quite enjoyed my Top 5 from a couple of weeks ago so will keep them going as long as I can think up good ones … This one was suggested by {another awesome} Kate who blogs over at talltalesfromchiconia! Head on over and check her blog out, it’s a great read!

So. My Top 5 Tips & Tricks … Where to begin? I am by no means an expert quilter but I thought since Kate suggested it, I’d share a couple of tips that have made my sewing life easier. Hope they help you too 🙂

#1. LEADERS & ENDERS! If you’ve read my blog in the last few months you might recognise my absolute favourite tip!! After making a quilt I would end up with a pile of wasted thread … Now instead I have these!
Leaders n EndersI always have a bowl of scraps cut into 2.5″ squares sitting beside me and slip a pair thru at the end of each chain. It’s like you’re making a bonus quilt without any real effort 😉 I chain stitch wherever possible. Chain stitching is putting thru multiple blocks without stopping resulting in a chain of goodies that you then press all at once too! These chains are from when I made “Kate’s Kate” :
IMG_4227 (2)I sew them into strips of 7 and then into blocks like this :
IMG_5840

#2 Measure twice, cut once. An oldie, but a goodie. Tips like these are long-lived because they are always relevant. I have lost count of the times I’ve saved myself juuust in the nick of time because I double checked before I cut. Mis cuts are the one of the easiest ways to waste fabric. And I don’t like wasting my pretties!
This tip also works when I’m playing with timber and furniture!

#3 PRESS. Press, press, press. Do not iron!
There are heaps of debates out there on whether to press to the side or press open. Personally I prefer to press to the dark side, but try both ways and go with what works for you.
My main tip here tho is PRESS – DO NOT IRON! Set your seam by pressing it, then open your seam in whichever direction you prefer and press 🙂

#4 Know your feet and use the correct one for the job. This one’s pretty self explanatory. Your machine comes with a wide variety of feet. They should all be explained in your machine’s manual.
FeetI mainly use my standard foot for piecing {not a fan of my 1/4″ foot, tho some people swear by them.} My machine came with a walking foot for quilting without slips or puckers, but you can pick one up at your local quilting store if yours didn’t. A guide bar is handy if you find one that comes with that too. I also bought a FMQ or Darning foot for my machine. And those are the 3 I use mostly. Because I also sometimes stitch clothing I also use a button-hole foot, hemming foot and zipper foot. {Not a fan of zippers tho so seldom use this one heehee}
If you’re not familiar with all of your machine’s feet, go find your manual and have a read … Better yet, grab some scraps and have a play with them! 🙂

#5 Look after your machine. I’m not sure if maybe I clean mine too much, but I give my bobbin case a quick dust with a soft brush every time I change the bobbin {unless I am in the middle of quilting a piece} and full clean after each project. They are also serviced yearly. Trust me, your machine will thank you!
Actually, I will add a little extra note here = Please change your needle regularly! Your machine will thank you, your fabric will thank you ❤

Bonus Tip – Give it a go! Whatever it is, most ‘mistakes’ are fixable so try it. You don’t know what you can and can’t do until you try, and I learn alot by trial and error! Your seam ripper can become your best friend and you may get frustrated, but it’s such a good way to get a feel for things! And you may surprise yourself and get it right straight up – imagine how great that will feel!

Well, I’m all worded out, so catch you next time! 🙂

A New Charm Along!!!

Did I tell you I was participating in Ms Midge’s latest Charm Swap?
This time round we’ve swapped Heather Bailey Charms.
HB CA Ms MidgeLet me tell you – they are GORGEOUS!!! This crappy nighttime photo certainly doesn’t do them justice, but here is the only one I have of my actual bundle:
HB Charm swap goodiesI was busy sorting when I took this as an after thought and I have already cut into them! lol

Ms Midge’s Heather Bailey Charm-Along kicked off this week, and I have a fantastic plan for these babies!!
No HST this time 😉 Can’t wait to share some pics with you 🙂

I have a little quilt top finish to share today!
I have been Quilting Along with Nanny Margie and this is the top!

IMG_6562It’s a sweet little cot-sized baby boy quilt!
I have a plan for a quick backing using off cuts from the front, but need to pick up some batting to quilt it. I have some gorgeous striped binding ready too …

After I get this Charm Along done I am going to be strict with myself and get a couple of UFOs finished. I should also have a clean out and destash a few fabrics. I swear I could almost start a fabric shop!

I have felt a little lost this week – this post was written days ago but I have had issues with my WiFi and printer … I was trying to set up my new printer and while uninstalling printer ‘stuff’ accidentally uninstalled something important 😦 eeekkk … Thankfully I have a fantastic Computer Wiz who sorted it all out for me!
Do you feel a little lost without your internet and printer too? 🙂

I’m working allllll weekend long, but I really hope you have a great weekend!

Kate’s First Top 5 – Blogs!

Thought I might occasionally start putting up a “Kate’s Top 5”!
This is the first ever! The themes will change, some might be sewing/quilting related, or some will be timber/furniture, some will no doubt be just general … stuff 🙂 Let’s see where it takes me! haha

This one is going to be …

Kate’s Top 5 BLOGS!
I follow a buttload alot of blogs! I have kinda a large range of intertwined interests and there are sooooo many clever people out there! I love to read along and gather ideas. Some share some awesome quilting tutorials, some include some great discounts from their sponsors, and heaps run fantastic giveaways! 😉

In no particular order here are my Top 5 reads!

#1 – Happy Quilting
This one’s predominately a quilting blog. Melissa is in the USA and does gorgeous work – And often shares FANTASTIC tutorials! There are always tips and tricks included. She also has a cute pattern shop and is an author!
Her book Irish Chain Quilts is on its way to me as we speak!

Can’t wait to get my hands on this one!

#2 – The Kitchen’s Garden
A lovely NZ lady living and farming in midwest US … Celi is aiming for self-sufficiency, sustainable farming, and simple clean living. Knowing where your food comes from and knowing what you put in your body. I love reading her blog and look forward to it every evening {I get disappointed if it’s not landed in my inbox before I crash for the night! haha}

Celi lives with the most gorgeous big, fat pig called Sheila {I won’t say she owns Sheila, because that’s not accurate! haha} There is a large cast of adorable animals and Celi’s photography of her life there is breathtaking.

SheilaThe other cuties include cows and calves, more pigs, goats, dogs, cats {lotsa gingers!!} peafowl, chickens, brand new turkeys … Always lots of brand new animals actually 🙂
Baby goatsBaby goats!!

#3 – Shanty 2 Chic
Two Texan sisters, these chicks are ROCKING!!
I love their tutes. And they have an extensive range! They share heaps of simple DIY projects from shelves and easy make-overs right up to building your own furniture.
They usually include plans as well, and helpful hints and tips! I have asked a few questions and they always take the time to answer! Here are a couple of my favourites from them, links are in the photos and underneath:

$5 Leather Strap Shelves
Kitchen Island Bench

#4 – Miss Mustard Seed {MMS}
As you might know, I work in a paint department as well as make over furniture. Both of which I LOVE!
Well, Marian is the maker of one of my favourite paint products – Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint!
And I truly believe Marian and I could be kindred spirits because we both love Hemp Oil to about the same degree haha Check out these colours!!!
I like Flow Blue best I think … Last year I made over a little TV cabinet for the boy’s playroom. It’s in Luckett’s Green {green is Mstr 9’s favourite colour!} Here it is :Kids TV cabinet makeover

If you make over furniture, or just want to pump new life into an old piece you really should try the Hemp Oil 🙂

#5 – Pat Sloan

Fabric and Quilt designer, Author, Podcast Host … And all round lovely lady!
Pat Sloan wears many caps and her blog and site show it! There’s heaps to see and join in on. I am taking part in a QAL – the Vacation Time QAL. All of them can be found here.
And have also joined in on one of Pat’s Challenges this year – the String Bean Challenge. Mine is Link #19 {Below} and I am sad to say it’s still in my UFO box 😦 You can find the challenges here.
IMG_6204 (2)I also first leaned of ‘Leaders and Enders” thru Pat Sloan’s Hip To Be Square Challenge! What a revelation!!! It’s like you’re making 2 quilts at once but you hardly notice … And sooooo much thread saved! Don’t forget to check out Pat’s gorgeous fabric lines!

Well … that’s it for my first “Top 5”!
What do you think? Do you have something you’d like me to do a “Top 5” on?

Have a great Friday everyone!
KATE Sig for Manic Mumdays

Friday Ramblings …

Yay!! It’s Friday!

While I remember the glee Friday brings for most people, it doesn’t hold the same allure for me cos I only work outside the home on weekends … So tomorrow is my Monday. And I am a little bummed about that! haha

Nah, it’s all good, I like my job for the most part 🙂

My beautiful friend The Divine Ms S. and I went to the movies today! A rare treat, especially thru the week! We even had a coffee before hand and lunch after!

We watched “Aloha” starring Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, and Rachel McAdams.

We were both really looking forward to seeing this chick flick, and I have to say we were both a little confused coming out. It was … weird. They didn’t do a good job of explaining some of the storyline and when a few things happened they were kinda out of the blue. Rachel McAdams seemed a little … disinterested and flat. Emma Stone was ok. Bill Murray and Alec Baldwin were in it and they couldn’t save it either.

To be honest, the best part of the movie for me was Bradley Cooper because

…well, because he’s a hottie! haha I think he is getting better looking as he gets older.
I could just about fall into those baby blues!

I’d probably not buy it or even watch it again. I’d give it 2 stars

Barking Dogs.
Is there anything worse from a neighbour’s point of view than a dog that will.not.stop.barking??? I have 3 yappers behind us that are only just getting controlled by their owners in the last week. Now they have new neighbours who have a large dog that just won’t shut up! *arghhh* It never stops.
It’s barking as I type this. Loudly. At 9pm at night 😦
I wish we lived on a large block with no near neighbours! {Tho we do have some lovely neighbours beside and across from us who I’d miss haha}

My big man is going for his very first sleep over tomorrow! I feel a little sick if I’m being truthful.
I’m sure he will be fine, but this is the first time he’s ever spent a night away from me except if he’s been just with hubby or at his Grandma’s … It’s a big step for a kid {and a Mum! 😉 }

I am going to work hard and get a finish done to share on Monday – I have a poor little lonely UFO that’s been almost done for a couple of weeks. This LONG weekend is all about UFOs! Have a great weekend!

KATE Sig for Manic Mumdays

Introducing my completed “Kate’s Kate”!

This baby has been a LONG time coming! I think because she is going to live on my bed I haven’t stressed about rushing to get her done. {After the initial rush to get her top finished – HERE} This is my use of the gorgeous Aussie Kate Spain Charm Swap by the lovely Ms Midge! In case I’ve never mentioned, I adore Kate Spain!

Kate's Kate

She is queen sized, and more beautiful than ever 🙂

I was half way thru working on the back when I put her away last year to finish some other projects. And there she languished … until I saw an offer to good to refuse to have her quilted by the fantabulous Kelly from The Quilt Machine!

Kates Kate Quilting

I had originally intended to make this a true double-sided quilt with a differently pieced back. I had pieced some window-style panels, but I knew there would be no chance I’d finish in time to send to Kel … after all, those freaking panels were why it’s been a UFO for a few months lol
So instead I whipped up the quickest backing I have ever done. {Have you noticed that despite the fact I am taking it “slow” with it, EVERYTHING to do with this quilt has been rushed??} I am happy with the backing tho, it features some of my favourite Kate Spain fabrics with some from Terrain, Cuzco, and Honey Honey. I adore how Kate Spain fabrics look so beautiful together – even from different lines.

Kate's Kate Back

Can you guess what my favourite colours are?
I find myself surrounded at home by testosterone with my boys and the man-child Mr Manic … Even the freaking dog is a male! haha. So I think that may have factored a little in my choices. This is MY quilt and I wanted it to be really girly for a change. Either way, I adore it!!

Once I got her home I changed my mind on the binding. I was going to go with a scrappy binding, but went with white instead and I think it works beautifully!

Kate's Kate Binding

Anyhow … I have a few projects on the boil now, so I’m off! Will share again soon 🙂

Merry Christmas Eve!!

Merry Christmas Eve everyone!

Is it sad that the thing I am looking forward to most is the Pavlova??

IMG_2932
{last year’s efforts *drool*} heehee

Seriously tho, I am really looking forward to tomorrow! The boys are so excited! We won’t be having a big one this year. My brother is coming over for lunch but it certainly won’t be the HUGE family Christmas from my childhood. That’s one of the sad things about people having fewer children I think – no more squeezing 30 people into a house for a huge day week of fun, food and cheer. Oh well … fun is what you make of it. We will still have a ball together … might even squeeze some sewing in after lunch and/or dinner 🙂

Does your family have any cute traditions at Christmas time?
We get new pyjamas on Christmas Eve and always have something ‘junky’ for dinner – The kids have requested Maccas – yuk! And then we’ll watch some junky tv.

I remember how excited we were as kids going to bed on Christmas Eve after leaving some milk and bikkies out for Santa. My boys leave a bucket of water and some carrots or oats out for the reindeer as well ❤ We used to try and stay awake to see Santa. My babies don’t seem to tho, they crash like a sack of potatoes! haha

Anyhow … Hope you all have a very happy and safe Christmas Day tomorrow!

The End Is Nigh …

… The end of the school year anyhow 😉
My little man finishes Kindy today!! I can’t believe it – where has the year gone?

I have to admit, I was a little teary! He has had some beautiful teachers and support staff this year. So has my gorgeous big boy. We have been very fortunate to have these ladies in their lives!

So, I decided to make them some quilted cushions for their gifts this year {AND a big box of chocs each heehee} I finished the last of the 5 today! Here are 3. I did 2 of each of the end ones :
cushion 2

I am in love with them! I hope they like them too

Because I have been doing these {and working, studying etc} I am only just getting to my latest finish … Check out my job for tonight! :

binding

And … on that note, sorry it’s a quick post, but I am off to dish up dinner and bind, bind, BIND! 🙂

Catch you soon

Random Musings and a Finish!

OK, so finally here are the pictures of my beautiful quilt I have been promising!

… and the back:

And the quilting by Quilting by Fiona :
IMG_5211
Can you tell I like scrappy binding? I have decided to make an effort to do scrappy now and then instead of every time from now on. Not every time I bind haha

This quilt is my Quilt Along from the Bonnie & Camille Charm Swap organised by Ms Midge.
I am soooo excited that I won a prize during the charm along! It was donated by the fabulous Keera from LiveLoveSew! The prize is a Scrumptious by B&C Layer Cake and a pattern by Keera herself, the X’s and O’s Quilt. I can not wait to give it a go! It looks lovely in the Scrumptious prints hey! 🙂
X and O quilt
It’s available to purchase HERE!

So, I am still going on the bed stripping and re-painting. I swear I will be done and returned on the weekend!
I must. I must. I must finish so I can move onto other patiently waiting projects …

IMG_5162
All of this paint is now removed, it’s been sanded and the first coat is on!
… please note the safety boots. I learnt well at work – “Safety first!” 😉
Seriously tho, I can’t stress enough that safety gear really should be used when using paint stripper.
You can’t see it, but I use safety glasses and gloves … This shizzle BURNS if you get it on ur skin!

It has to be said, the flies in our neighbourhood have quite the substance abuse problem!
They swarmed to the toxic paint stripper haha

My house is a pigsty right now!
Mr Manic is away for work and returning this afternoon. I am hooking in to finish it before he gets home and thinks we have been burgled and ransacked! haha It’s like an obstical course 🙂

It just feels so GREAT to have a purge of ‘stuff’ tho! I am even *gasp* destashing some fabric!!
I need to get rid of much more as I will never use it … but, baby steps must be taken!

The Fault In Our Stars.

I watched this gorgeous little movie last night. Cried like a baby!
I like to watch movies cold. ie not know too much about it before I watch. I find that if I go see something that has had its trailer played over and over on tv for a month or 3 that most of the good bits are in the trailer and I am left disappointed.
This movie did not disappoint at all. Fantastic acting by relative unknowns. Laura Dern was the only one I knew. I totally recommend you see it!

Rightio, back to the spring cleaning/purging/streamlining 🙂 Have a great weekend!

Sometimes I Learn Lessons the Hard Way …

….. I don’t know why. But sometimes I just seem to make something easy, very, very difficult!

This last couple of weeks have been very fucking frustrating … errr … trying. I traded services with a lovely friend of mine and found myself with a bed to paint.
This is something that excited me! My friend wanted a gloss white. Her daughter wanted colour. I made the rookie mistake of talking about it with Mum in front of Daughter and ended up volunteering to paint purple under white and shabby it a little to bring some purple out.

So, I was still excited at this point!

Look how the purple looked :

IMG_5125

Sooooooo pretty hey!

Then I dove in and started the white. This is where my excitement ended.

It just.wasn’t.working.for.me

I haven’t touched this bed end since this pic was taken so I don’t have as much work to do as I could have … but I had done a few coats on the sides and bed head. And it wasn’t covering well. I didn’t want to use any blocking/sticking/primer type products as this would have made it harder to shabby nicely. So in the end the decision was made to cut it back and paint it in the white gloss the Mum originally wanted.
I’m so sorry Ms M and Miss A! xox I feel really awful! Usually painting items takes me a day per coat, {MAX! often I can squeeze 2 coats into a day!} then a sand and wax and I’m done. NOT this time.

I began sanding the piece back and quickly realised sanding {even with my palm, orbital or belt sanders} wasn’t going to cut it. Pardon the pun 😉 So today I bit the bullet and started with the paint stripper. There’s no turning back now! It’s half stripped and I am out of stripper – should have gotten the jumbo tin! haha Here is where I am at :

IMG_5148 IMG_5149

This story will be funny one day.

Today is not that day!

The lessons I have learned are :

1. I don’t like custom work. I like to do what I want and sell later.

2. I am spoiled by Chalk Paint and Milk Paint! They are far and away my absolute favourite mediums to use when painting furniture!

3. I also learnt to use paint stripper properly. {and I learned to use gloves when using it! haha}

So I guess at least my trials and tribulations have served their purpose for the day.

I am still waiting on time to finish a quilt back – hope to tonight since I can’t do any more work on the bed frame … Then I will have it quilted and share some pics 🙂 If I am on the ball tomorrow I will try to get pics taken of my last finish – the Bonnie & Camille – and share them. I know, I know! I have been promising this one for over 2 weeks! Can’t rush these things hey 😀

I am absolutely loving my TAFE course right now!

I had my first classroom time last week for placement which makes a lovely change from the special work I have been doing so far.
One of the biggest things that struck me was how affectionate some of the kids are!! I got heaps of hugs just in that 2 hr session! Started before I even walked into the classroom 🙂 Bless their little hearts, they are soooo cute!

Anyhow, that’s all I’ve got for today … fingers X’d I will get time to check back in tomorrow!
