Sometimes I Learn Lessons the Hard Way …

….. I don’t know why. But sometimes I just seem to make something easy, very, very difficult!

This last couple of weeks have been very fucking frustrating … errr … trying. I traded services with a lovely friend of mine and found myself with a bed to paint.
This is something that excited me! My friend wanted a gloss white. Her daughter wanted colour. I made the rookie mistake of talking about it with Mum in front of Daughter and ended up volunteering to paint purple under white and shabby it a little to bring some purple out.

So, I was still excited at this point!

Look how the purple looked :

IMG_5125

Sooooooo pretty hey!

Then I dove in and started the white. This is where my excitement ended.

It just.wasn’t.working.for.me

I haven’t touched this bed end since this pic was taken so I don’t have as much work to do as I could have … but I had done a few coats on the sides and bed head. And it wasn’t covering well. I didn’t want to use any blocking/sticking/primer type products as this would have made it harder to shabby nicely. So in the end the decision was made to cut it back and paint it in the white gloss the Mum originally wanted.
I’m so sorry Ms M and Miss A! xox I feel really awful! Usually painting items takes me a day per coat, {MAX! often I can squeeze 2 coats into a day!} then a sand and wax and I’m done. NOT this time.

I began sanding the piece back and quickly realised sanding {even with my palm, orbital or belt sanders} wasn’t going to cut it. Pardon the pun ๐Ÿ˜‰ So today I bit the bullet and started with the paint stripper. There’s no turning back now! It’s half stripped and I am out of stripper – should have gotten the jumbo tin! haha Here is where I am at :

This story will be funny one day.

Today is not that day!

The lessons I have learned are :

1. I don’t like custom work. I like to do what I want and sell later.

2. I am spoiled by Chalk Paint and Milk Paint! They are far and away my absolute favourite mediums to use when painting furniture!

3. I also learnt to use paint stripper properly. {and I learned to use gloves when using it! haha}

So I guess at least my trials and tribulations have served their purpose for the day.

I am still waiting on time to finish a quilt back – hope to tonight since I can’t do any more work on the bed frame … Then I will have it quilted and share some pics ๐Ÿ™‚ If I am on the ball tomorrow I will try to get pics taken of my last finish – the Bonnie & Camille – and share them. I know, I know! I have been promising this one for over 2 weeks! Can’t rush these things hey ๐Ÿ˜€

I am absolutely loving my TAFE course right now!

I had my first classroom time last week for placement which makes a lovely change from the special work I have been doing so far.
One of the biggest things that struck me was how affectionate some of the kids are!! I got heaps of hugs just in that 2 hr session! Started before I even walked into the classroom ๐Ÿ™‚ Bless their little hearts, they are soooo cute!

โค

Anyhow, that’s all I’ve got for today … fingers X’d I will get time to check back in tomorrow!

Bits n Pieces …

Ugh! I started this post nearly 2 weeks ago!

Then I had TAFE and work and kids and … life got in the way.

And then on Saturday evening there was a large fire just up the road and our local internet crashed. When it was still down I reported the issue to Telstra. They said it would be rectified in 48-72 hrs. I gave them 72hrs {almost to the minute ๐Ÿ˜‰ heehee} and rang again this afternoon … Turns out everyone else’s was restored Monday. Ours was fixed after 1 1/2 hrs on the phone and a LOT of cajolling on my part :-/

Anyhow … here is what I was sayin’ :
Did anyone catch the new series with Nina Proudman Asher Keddie in it? ?
I wasn’t going to as I am still mourning Offspring. But it was a slow night and I thought what the hell … I didn’t mind it.
The only thing I didn’t really like in the pilot was the repetitive phrase “Across it” They used it 3 times in the first couple of minutes.
Not a great phrase and very noticeable. On the whole I didn’t mind it tho, and I’ll watch it again ๐Ÿ™‚
And here is where I got up to lol :
since I’ve now caught another episode, I still think it’s ok. It’s not knocking my socks off, but I guess I am still comparing it to her other work … AND they friggin said “Across it” again!!! ARGH!

โค

I have been so busy lately!! Big working weeks, TAFE placements and working on assessments for it at night as well as running round after the kids means Kate is one tired little chicken …
We had a ladies night at work tonight and I have not long gotten home from hosting a demo table *yawn* I work in the paint dept {which I adore!} and I demonstrated how I make my own chalk paint! Fun!!

Speaking of “Chicken”, Mr.5 has started calling me “Chicken” It’s so cute!!! He uses the cutest tone. And sometimes turns it into “My little chicken” Love his guts! He is such a little character ๐Ÿ˜€

โค

Mr.8 came home yesterday bursting with pride!
He set himself a goal of being awarded a “Bronze Medallion” this year. To my knowledge there’s only 2 been awarded since the school opened 4yrs ago. To get one you have to obtain 4 purple merit certificates in one month which earns you a “Principal’s Award” … 10 Principal’s awards earns you a Bronze Medallion. And he did it! With a month to spare! ๐Ÿ˜€ They told him he is the youngest to get one! He is so proud of himself and I couldn’t be prouder of him either! Love his guts!

Anyhow, I will do a proper post over the weekend … one with pictures an’ all! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Another Makeover!

Hi!

And it’s a long weekend here in sunny Qld – yaaay!!

I am having a HUGE spring clean right now. And just for shits n giggles I thought {for some reason} that it was practical to paint a few of the rooms at the same time. Seemed like a good idea at the time! haha
I went to move some furniture round and decided to save time … Paint the walls I am putting the furniture on and then I won’t have to move the furniture over the next few weeks again to paint ๐Ÿ™‚ See? Sanity amid the madness!

You know how things always get really messy when you spring clean … before they get … clean?
Well, that’s where I’m at right now. Messy! But I am making progress, so I persevere!

โค

I finished a quilt last weekend and it went to my quilter Tuesday. She is a magician and got it back to me Wednesday!! Such fabulous work and always waaaay faster than I expect! Anyhow, I am binding it this weekend and will show it off next week.
If you are after a fantastic quilter you can find Fiona’s facebook page HERE! I highly recommend her!

I have some pics of my last furniture makeover to tide you over tho!

This is what it started as :

IMG_4591
I ripped the back off and started sanding before I remembered I hadn’t taken pics … oops! So please excuse the back just sitting behind ๐Ÿ™‚
After I removed the back I was a little worried as it became wobbly. I was very hopeful that putting a new back on it would stabilise. It did!

A good waxing all over and it’s good to go! Here it is after :

IMG_4682

I painted it in Annie Sloan Chalk Paint – Florence. Which matches my sewing desk and replaced the back with some decorative pine ply. I used ply as the back was going to be visible and I wanted the layers to be a feature like this :

IMG_4695 (2)

I used a nice thick piece to make it heavier and more stable. It’s turned out exactly how I wanted it to and fits into the space I wanted to use it on perfectly! I sometimes think it’s sad how giddy I get when playing with my little projects and they work out just as I planned … But then I just get on with being giddy! haha ๐Ÿ™‚
I haven’t finished putting all my bits n bobs on it, but here it is in its space; and in relation to the desk :

โค

Well, that’s all I’ve got for tonight – have a fantastic weekend!
And if you’re in Queensland, have a fantastic LONG weekend!

Happy Birthday to Me!! Plus Astronomy and a Make Over!

Well, Happy Birthday to “Manic Mumdays” anyhow ๐Ÿ˜‰

2 Years ago yesterday I started this little blog! Yaay! And I am only just this last few months being kind to it and spending some real time on here.

โค

I was going to post this last night but we went with our Grade 3 classes out to the lake and had a session with the Astronomy Club!

Oh.eM.Geeeee!
I could soooo buy myself a decent telescope and get into that as a hobby! It was amazing! The fabulous telescopes they had out there cost less than I assumed! Might be time to start saving! Haha!
When our lovely host, Bob was talking about the Milky Way and the fact that it has 200Billion stars, I was getting a little teary with how insignificant we really are!
It blows my mind that all of that potential is out there. I definitely believe we can’t be alone in this … We’re talking 200,000,000,000 other stars – just in our Galaxy! And if each of those stars has 8 planets like ours does that’s 1.6Trillion possibilities! {that’s 1,600,000,000,000} There has to be some other life form out there – What do you think?

We saw Saturn which looked just like this but a little less distinct:

And Jupiter with a couple of its 60+ moons. Our view was exactly like this :

We got to see Mercury just before it disappeared over the horizon and Mars which really was red! There was some white on it from the nitrogen ice cap! We looked at a brand new {only 10,000,000 years old ๐Ÿ˜‰ } cluster of 40+ stars called the Jewel Box Cluster :

We also looked at The Southern Cross and Alpha Centauri {actually 2 stars! And one of the Pointers!}; Scorpio; and Sagittarius.

*sigh* I desperately want a telescope now! haha

โค

Mr Manic helped me move my newly made over sewing table into place on Thursday!

To say I’m in love is an understatement!

Here are some pics :

Desk Before

Desk After

The ‘After’ pics are in crappy light, cos we kept running out of time and I didn’t want to go without using it any longer haha
The colour is darker – more the colour of the top.

I replaced the handles with some gorgeous crystal drawer pulls I found in the Antique store; bogged up the old holes; repaired some minor damage to the bottom on one of the drawers; papered the drawers; painted it; and replaced the old, rusty castors.
It was a bit ugly with its old, yellowing varnish, but structurally, it was in fantastic condition!

I have decided to make over a little bookcase I got cheap at a garage sale in the same colour to put with it. I’ll finally have something to store my quilting books, patterns, and bits n bobs on! It was pretty sound but since removing it’s back it’s a little fragile. Fingers X’d I can fix him up ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyhow … I am off to work a bit more on my little bookcase now!
Have a fantabulous weekend everyone!

Latest Upcycle Project Sneak Peek

Hi Everyone! Thanks for stopping by!

I am still working on my sewing table … would you like a sneak peek?

kates table snippit

I am in LOVE with the colour!
But … Looking at it I am kinda in half a mind that it’s too full on all in the same colour.
I was originally going to stain it.
Then decided to use some of the gorgeous Annie Sloan Chalk Paint I won and talked about HERE.

I think for now I will wax it and then down the track I might cut the top back and stain it … What do you think?

โค

My gorgeous Kate Spain Charm Along quilt made an appearance on 13 Spools this week! You can find it HERE! I feel very honoured!

โค

My poor little man is sick ๐Ÿ˜ฆ I had to leave a training course early yesterday to collect him from kindy and he came home and crashed. I thought he was mainly just tired but then we woke him for a bath and he insisted on going to bed without dinner and crashed again! He came out round 9pm saying “I just want to cuddle you and then go back to bed” which he did.
He is crashed out on the couch right now ๐Ÿ˜ฆ Poor little darling, I hate when they’re sick!

โค

I dug round YouTube to find this and share with a friend today and thought I’d share it here too. Very funny stuff ๐Ÿ˜€

Anyhow, I’m off to check on my sick baby. Cya next time!

Mid Week Rambling

That’s right – HAPPY HUMP DAY everyone!
Not that I know why I’m excited – I work Sat/Sun/Mon/Tue this weekend … so it’s kinda like a long weekend in reverse or an anti-long-weekend! lol

Oh well … I don’t mind cos I must admit, I am absolutely loving my job right now! I spoke to my boss the other day and she has okayed me holding a DIY class on make-your-own Chalk Paint! Yaay! Very excited ๐Ÿ™‚ And next week I am going to try making my own Milk Paint! If only finding powder pigments weren’t so hard! Do any of you know where I can find some that won’t cost an arm and a leg??

โค

Not much is happening on the sewing front for me right now.
This might be hard to believe, but I have been sewing for the last year or two on a Blow Mould, fold out table in our living room! haha
Anyhow, I lent our 2 fold out tables to a friend last week and I took it as an opportunity for a clean up.
The same day I found this amazing wooden table/desk on Gumtree!!

IMG_4393 (2)

It’s on castors and needs a bit of a tidy up, you might be able to see I’ve already started to sand the drawers? One needed a little repair too and I put them back in to take a quick pic … The yellow/orange varnish has to go!
This baby is super sturdy tho! And she fits my cutting mat well. Exactly what I was looking for!
I will at last be able to sew above medium speed without the table shaking and supplies falling off from the vibrations! ๐Ÿ˜€
Hopefully I will get the make over done including a quick wax today, and get her in and being used by tomorrow!

And not before time either! I’m running late on August’s Bee block! :-/ September’s is up already and I hope to get them both done before Friday … Speaking of Friday – It’s my little man’s birthday!! I can’t believe he will be 5 already!! He has requested a Minecraft cake and I was pushing for Creeper. He has narrowed it down to Enderman. *phew*! Of alllll the possible Minecraft cakes, this would have to be the easiest!

โค

I am starting a detox tomorrow. Not sure what to expect, but I am going to be very strict and stick to it all. Even the nil-caffine rule! :-/ Not sure how that one will go! lol Wish me luck!

โค

Check out this fun Quilt Block quiz! I found it over at the Missouri Star Quilt Co. blog, Cutting Table. You can take it by clicking the pic :

which quilt block

Sew, which Quilt Block are you? I’d love it if you left me a comment to let me know!
I got ‘Flying Geese’ which is interesting since I have never made a flying geese block. Like ever! haha
Might have to add something with them to my to-do list …

โค

Well … that’s all I have for today. Will try to squeeze a quick update in early next week – Cya then!

I have recently upcycled a cheap TV cabinet for the boy’s new playroom {I am re-arranging and re-painting all the rooms}.

I usedย Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint for it. It is lightly shabbied and waxed.
This is the before and after :

Kids TV cabinet makeover

I will take some better pictures of it and share in a future post.

โค

I recently tried my hand at making my own chalk paint and have started a little project with it :

IMG_4355

I am in love with the colour! It is sooooo bright and beautiful!!

โค

I am also going to try to make my own milk paint in the next few days!
When I have done so, and used it, I will do a special post rating the 4 in my own opinion. So stay tuned! ๐Ÿ˜‰
